Behind the Making of VitaMega™ Complex

A conversation with VitaMega™ co-inventor John McCoy, PhD of Project Chemistry about the science, intention, and ingredient synergy behind Soulstice's proprietary complex.

VitaMega™ Complex is at the heart of every Soulstice formula: a proprietary blend of Kakadu Plum, Sacha Inchi, and Inositol designed with healthier-looking hair over time in mind.

But VitaMega™ didn’t begin in a lab with a list of ingredients. It began with a question: could we rethink what it means to care for hair over time?

We asked cosmetic chemist and VitaMega™ co-inventor John McCoy, PhD, to take us behind the complex, from the original idea to the unconventional process that brought it to life.

A Note From Nancy

When I started developing Soulstice, I knew I wanted there to be something at the center of the formulas that reflected the way I had come to think about hair health after more than a decade in the industry.

I wasn't interested in choosing a single buzzy ingredient and building a story around it. I wanted to start with the bigger picture: What does hair actually need to support its healthiest state over time? And could we create something intentionally designed around those needs, rather than simply adding a collection of actives to an already-developed formula?

That became the starting point for VitaMega™ Complex.

Working with John, we approached the process in reverse. Before we developed the individual Soulstice formulas, we focused on creating a proprietary complex that could serve as a foundation for the collection. We ultimately landed on three ingredients, Kakadu Plum, Sacha Inchi, and Inositol, chosen not only for what each could contribute individually, but for how they could work together.

That distinction was important to me. I've always believed that the best formulas aren't about having the longest list of impressive-sounding ingredients. They're about being thoughtful with what you include, why it's there, and how everything works together.

VitaMega™ became an expression of that philosophy, and I wanted to share a little more about how we created it. So I asked John to take us behind the formulation process and explain the science in his own words.

Nancy Twine: Developing a proprietary complex isn't something most brands do. What was different about the way we approached VitaMega™?

John McCoy: The major difference was the development order. Most projects begin with an existing formula and then look for ways to enhance it with specialty ingredients. With VitaMega™, we started from scratch, designing something special first and then building the products around it. Rather than adding something to an existing formula, we built the entire system around VitaMega™ from the very beginning.

NT: VitaMega™ combines Kakadu Plum, Sacha Inchi, and Inositol. How did we arrive at those three ingredients?

JM: Healthy hair growth depends on getting three things right at the same time: a low-oxidative-stress environment, adequate structural raw materials, and functional membrane integrity and signaling, with inflammation kept in check.

Kakadu Plum, Sacha Inchi, and Inositol map almost one-to-one onto those three needs.

NT: What does each ingredient bring to the complex?

JM: Each ingredient is carrying a different load:

Kakadu Plum is our antioxidant engine. It's one of the most vitamin-C-dense botanicals on earth, and vitamin C does double duty: it helps the body build the collagen that supports the structure around each follicle, and it neutralizes oxidative stress, which is one of the things that ages a follicle prematurely.

Sacha Inchi is the nourishment and barrier piece. It's exceptionally rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, plus vitamin E, the kind of lipids the scalp barrier and hair fiber actually need, with a natural calming, anti-inflammatory character.

Finally, Inositol works at the cellular level. It's part of the phospholipid signaling system inside cells, so it supports the kind of healthy cell activity and membrane integrity that a productive follicle relies on, while also helping hold moisture.

So with VitaMega™, you've got antioxidant defense, structural nourishment, and cellular signaling covered.

NT: One of the things we wanted VitaMega™ to represent was more than three beneficial ingredients grouped together. What makes them particularly complementary?

JM: This is an important distinction because the ingredients reinforce each other both biologically and within the formula. They're complementary, not just stacked.

The vitamin C in Kakadu Plum actually regenerates the vitamin E in Sacha Inchi. Once vitamin E has done its job neutralizing a lipid radical, vitamin C recharges it. The two antioxidants can therefore support each other, one in the water phase and one in the oil phase.

At the same time, the omega fatty acids in Sacha Inchi are delicate because they're prone to oxidation. The antioxidants from Kakadu Plum help protect them, so those beneficial fats remain intact rather than degrading.

Similarly, Inositol and fatty acids both contribute to healthy cell membranes and signaling functions.

So it's not three ingredients sitting next to each other on a label. It's three ingredients that protect, recharge, and reinforce one another.

NT: There's no shortage of buzzy ingredients in beauty. From a chemist's perspective, what makes VitaMega™ different from simply adding the latest trending active to a formula?

JM: Hair health isn't one problem. It's an environment.

You need oxidative stress under control, you need the right structural lipids and building blocks, and you need healthy cell signaling. We built VitaMega™ around that system instead of around a single point. We chose ingredients for how they interact together: the antioxidant recycling, the protection of those fragile fatty acids, and the shared support for membrane health.

VitaMega™ is a "complex" because the parts complement each other. We also chose them for how they hold up together in a real formula, because actives that degrade on the shelf help no one.

NT: For someone who isn't a chemist, how would you explain what we mean when we talk about creating an environment for healthier-looking hair?

JM: Establishing a healthy, balanced follicular environment is essential for the best hair growth. If you think of hair like a plant, we're helping create the right conditions in the soil so that the hair has what it needs to grow strong.

The Bigger Idea Behind VitaMega™

That philosophy became central to the way we developed Soulstice. Rather than thinking only about what a formula can do for hair in the few minutes it's being washed, conditioned, or styled, VitaMega™ reflects our belief that hair care should also be approached as an ongoing practice. The health of our hair is influenced by its environment, and supporting that environment requires more than chasing a single ingredient or immediate cosmetic result.

It's why VitaMega™ wasn't developed to be the hero ingredient of one product. We developed the complex first, then made it a foundational part of the Soulstice collection. Healthier hair isn't built around one miracle ingredient… it's the result of creating the right conditions, then caring for them consistently.
